چکیده

We present opacity sampling model atmospheres, synthetic spectra and colors for brown dwarfs and very low mass stars in two limiting case of dust grain formation: 1) inefficient gravitational settling i.e. the dust is distributed according to the chemical equilibrium predictions, 2) efficient gravitational settling i.e. the dust forms and depletes refractory elements from the gas, but their opacity does not affect the thermal structure. The models include the formation of over 600 gas phase species, and 1000 liquids and crystals, and the opacities of 30 different types of grains including corundum (Al2O3), the magnesium aluminum spinel MgAl2O4, iron, enstatite (MgSiO3), forsterite (Mg2SiO4), amorphous carbon, SiC, and a number of calcium silicates. The models extend from the beginning of the grain formation regime well into the condensation regime of water ice (Teff = 3000 − 100 K) and encompasses the range of log g = 2.5 − 6.0 at solar metallicity. We find that silicate dust grains can form abundantly in the outer atmospheric layers of red and brown dwarfs with spectral type later than M8. The greenhouse effects of dust opacities provide a natural explanation for the peculiarly red spectroscopic distribution of the latest M dwarfs and young brown dwarfs. The grainless (Cond) models on the other hand, correspond closely to methane brown dwarfs such as Gliese 229B. We also

Rain and Clouds in Brown Dwarf Atmospheres: a Coupled Problem from Small to Large

The large scale structure of a brown dwarf atmosphere is determined by an interplay of convection, radiation, dust formation, and gravitational settling, which possibly provides an explanation for the observed variability. The result is an element depletion of the dust forming regions and an element enrichment of the dust evaporating sites. The formation of dust cloud structures in substellar a...

Alma Observations of Ρ-oph 102: Grain Growth and Molecular Gas in the Disk around a Young Brown Dwarf

We present ALMA continuum and spectral line observations of the young Brown Dwarf ρ-Oph 102 at about 0.89 mm and 3.2 mm. We detect dust emission from the disk at these wavelengths and derive an upper limit on the radius of the dusty disk of ∼ 40 AU. The derived variation of the dust opacity with frequency in the mm provides evidence for the presence of mm-sized grains in the disk outer regions....

First Detection of Millimeter Dust Emission from Brown Dwarf Disks

We report results from the first deep millimeter continuum survey targeting Brown Dwarfs (BDs). The survey led to the first detection of cold dust in the disks around two young BDs (CFHT-BD-Tau 4 and IC 348 613), with deep JCMT and IRAM observations reaching flux levels of a few mJy. The dust masses are estimated to be a few Earth masses assuming the same dust opacities as usually applied to T ...

Optical spectroscopy of DENIS mini-survey brown dwarf candidates

We present optical (6500-9200Å) spectroscopy of eight cool dwarfs detected in a 231 square degree “Mini-survey” of the Deep NEar Infrared Survey (DENIS) data. We are able to confirm that the spectral types derived from the Mini-survey infrared spectroscopy are meaningful. We provide a spectral sequence which extends beyond the M-dwarf range and into the proposed “L” class of dwarfs. The dominan...
